you can usually find our design team elbow-deep in samples, but last week found them at a place much more minimal. taking a day trip to new canaan, connecticut, the team explored the rambling estate of modern architecture icon philip johnson and fell in love with his personal masterpiece—the glass house.
built in 1949, it was one of the first of its kind to incorporate industrial elements in its construction. the use of new materials, attention to detail, cohesive vision and elegance of simple geometry all contributed to what one of our designers called “a life-changing journey.”
the team came back freshly inspired to work on our fall 2012 collection. how will you see the glass house influencing future product? watch for basic shapes treated in unexpected ways. mixed media embellishments are in the works, “we’re planning to use materials in a new way—pulling inspiration from all directions.” and when it comes to the little things, the details are key—“we’re creating magic on a personal level.”
