it’s all about the kennedy

susan, our design director of handbags and small leather goods, is always on the go—so we seized the recent opportunity to ask her a few questions about the kennedy family, our latest handbag collection (and favorite new shape of the season).

where did you get your inspiration for this collection?

i wanted to tap into the trend of colorblocking and material play, but in our own way. handbags in general have become much more clean. they’re less about multiple pieces of hardware and more about a single standout detail.

what was involved in the design process?

kennedy actually started out with a new piece of hardware, however, when the sample arrived, i knew something wasn’t right. it felt a bit too serious for our whimsical brand. we began playing with the details and eventually ended up with one of our signature bows, which felt just right.

did you design this bag intending for it to be fall’s “it” shape?

we don’t usually know for sure which bag will become the “it” shape until we see the first round of samples, but we definitely have a good idea of it during the sketching stage. on occasion there have been surprises, but we usually have a gut instinct about it up front.
