i find my stories by…”word of mouth! i’ve made so many friends—innkeepers, photographers, travelers—who constantly send places my way and say, ‘this is so design tripper.’ they’re usually spot-on.”

the prettiest place i’ve ever featured is…”an extraordinary five-storey stone palazetto built into the cliffside of civita, an ancient cobblestoned italian village only accessible by footpath. my friend, patrizio fradiani, fixed it up and designed the most magnificent garden overlooking the vast, golden tibor river valley below.”

i love to travel because i love….to see the world, to experience something extraordinary, to relish in a simple pleasure, to be challenged, to be humbled, to be inspired, to relax, to get lost, to find myself.”

my most memorable trip has been…kayaking through halong bay in vietnam.”

my advice for finding a unique place to stay is…dig deeper. don’t just stay somewhere just because the photos are beautiful. read reviews, talk to someone on the phone or exchange several emails with a real person. research is extra work, but it always pays off. be judicious.”

one thing i can’t leave home without is…“a good book and my knitting needles.”

when i’m not traveling…“i write for magaines like conde nast traveler and travel and leisure; take reservations for honor & folly, my bed and breakfast in downtown detroit; and, of course, plan my next trip.”
