just a hop, skip and a ferry ride away

welcome back to our summer friday series, where we tag along with staffers on their half-day fridays (and luxuriously longer weekends). this week we hopped a ferry for a weekend of surf, turf and a few card games in fire island…

name: suzanne schloot

job: social media manager

where: fire island, new york

1. too cool: “a trip to fire island is never complete without a stop at houser’s bar in ocean beach to watch the sunset. their signature cocktail, the zippy cooler, is not to be missed.”

2. getting there: “it’s a short 25 minute ferry ride, but the moment you hop on the boat is when the real vacation starts!”

3. how charming: “there are several towns on the island but ocean beach is its unofficial capital. mom & pop shops & markets dot its main streets, and it overflows with small-town charm, reminiscent of simpler times.”

4. get your claws: “we had the lobster special at houser’s before heading back to the city while waiting for the ferry on sunday.”

5. bike around town: “one of the first things you’ll notice on fire island is the absence of cars. bicycles and red wagons are the preferred mode of transportation.”

6. play your cards: “i brought a deck of cards and we’d play games on the back deck in the morning and before dinner. we even played a few on the beach. go fish!”

7. beach bum: “the beach is never more than a 10 minute walk from any point on the island. while food nor drinks are allowed on ocean beach, a pup is a must! you’ll always see a dog or two running through the sand.

8 & 9.  in the zone: “we caught some really great waves. make sure to surf and swim only in the designated areas… there’s nothing worse than coming in after a lifeguard warning whistle. (guilty as charged.)”
