we're discovering...

we've invited gallery owner and palm beach girl-about-town sarah gavlak to introduce us, each month, to a work of art that captures the spirit of our featured color. sarah enjoys reading biographies of famous women and declares pink, a neutral in palm beach, to be her signature shade.

optimistic yellow brings to mind daffodils and tulips, popping up through the frozen ground, as the first hint of spring. these flowers give us hope for warmer days ahead and for lighter, more fanciful fashion options. painter christopher milne's work celebrates these days and refers back to a time when white was never worn before memorial day or after labor day and hats were de rigueur for ladies and gentleman alike. milne's mad men-esque subjects are a combined study of art and fashion history from the 50's and 60's. his floral street series of women with large blooming hats is a mix of the genres of portraiture and still life: giant bouquets seem to overtake the perfectly-coiffed heads of his subjects. in this piece, velma proudly yet demurely dons her bright yellow bonnet in anticipation of both an easter parade and the painting of her striking portrait. |
