curling up with classic movies–particularly ones lush with colorful costume designs and stylish sets–are one of our favorite ways to while away the weekend. on this occasion we’re  happy to bask in the comfort of our own settee and watch one of our favorite films, 1964’s what a way to go.

in this classic comedy, a young and stunning shirley maclaine (in, at one point, all her gold lame one-piece glory) stars as an ill-fated ingénue who denounces money in the name of true love yet finds herself rotating through an enviable list of the most eligible characters (played by the most eligible men of the golden era, including dean martin, gene kelly and paul newman to name a few) and winds up as an oh-so wealthy widower, despite her best efforts to search out a simple life.

 the silver lining  to her string of her marriage misfortune? an over-the-top wardrobe that that takes pops of color (one of the things we love most) to a new level with powder blue crinoline-ruffled nightgowns, frothy tangerine marabou-trimmed hats and a pink floor-length chinchilla coat—all designed on a $500,000 budget by famed costume designer edith head who received eight academy awards and 35 nominations in her career(including one of her work in what a way to go.)

 mix in glossy beehive updos (created by the 72 hairstylists on set) and $3.5 million dollars worth of jewels for good measure and you have cinematic sartorial magic worthy of a weekend night.
