welcome back to our summer friday series, where we tag along with staffers on their half-day fridays (and luxuriously longer weekends). last week, we hopped the pond for a few days in london to hang out with family friends and cheer on team usa at the summer olympics.

1. a hop, skip and a jump: “i had been following the olympics obsessively in the weeks leading up to our trip, so as we were sitting on the runway i couldn’t wait to touchdown in london… though i did stop to capture the gorgeous new york sky before we took off.”

2. all-americana: “i met my parents at heathrow and we stayed with family friends in north london, which served as home-base for the week. as soon as we arrived, we were greeted with a huge american flag hanging in their kitchen… diplomacy at its best!”

3. sweet inspiration: “the slogan of the london olympics. the city was alive with patriotism and spirit.”

4. horsing around: “our first event was the equestrian jumping finals, which was a perfect start to the games since my whole family rides horses. my sister and i made it onto the jumbo screen as we wildly waved our flags and cheered on the two riders from team usa!”

5. hot ticket: “this is a stub i’ll definitely be saving.”

6. in good order: “i was impressed with how well-organized everything was. all the tube stations had signs pointing spectators in the right direction for every event. thousands of volunteers were on hand to help people get where they needed to go. when we went to pick up tickets to the games, they even provided travel cards so that you wouldn’t have to waste time buying tickets for the underground.”

7. on the ball: “we scored great seats for the men’s semifinal volleyball match—right in the action.”

8. in the bag: “my sister’s kate spade new york scout cross-body was perfect for the olympics—it left hands free to wave the flag.”

9. perfectly polished “to prep for the olympics, i had to make sure my nails were patriotic!”

34

“one of the best meals i’ve ever had in london was at 34 in mayfair. their fleur de sel chocolate and coconut bombe is not to be missed.”

hawksmoor

“they’re known for having the best steak in london and i can’t say that i disagree. before dinner, be sure to pop over to spitafields bar downstairs for amazing cocktails—their ‘desert island drinks,’ which change monthly, are dangerously good.”

queen of the hoxton

“after dinner at hawksmoor, you can go out in nearby shoreditch, one of the trendiest new areas in london. queen of hoxton has an amazing roof terrace.”
