a guide for perfect guests

four colorful hostess gift ideas for summer stays
July 16, 2012  |   column: DELIBERATE POLISH

whether you’re bunking à duex at a friend’s beachside bungalow or spending a week at a family friend’s lakefront estate, the key to being a model guest is giving your hosts a thoughtful gift that says merci beaucoup in a fresh, novel way. here are four summery, special ways to indulge your hosts. (if you play your cards right, you’ll be welcomed back next year. we promise!)

SEND a summer’s worth of flowers

who can resist a bundle of beautiful blooms? rather than bringing a simple bouquet, florist h.bloom offers exquisite arrangements delivered directly to your host’s doorstep. choose from weekly, bi-weekly or monthly subscriptions. we’re partial to ordering the loose stems and preparing the first delivery ourselves in a beautiful vase with a sweet note.

MAKE a movie memento

leave your hosts a gift they can savor for years by shooting a little film of your stay with this brilliantly lo-fi, hand-operated camera from legendary film company, lomo. called the lomokino, it shoots the most beautiful, grainy mini movies on 35 mm film and lets you watch your work when it’s done. we suggest leaving the camera behind for their screening pleasure (simply wrap and present it in a pretty tote with some extra rolls of film, so they can make their own masterpieces.)

PLAN an afternoon al fresco

instead of showing up with the usual bottle of wine, prepare a picnic by the sea (or even the backyard) complete with the prettiest wicker basket stuffed with a thermos of spiked lemonade, sandwiches, plates for all (these pretty solar ones are made of melamide, so they’re also unbreakable). bring along some big, fluffy beach towels and enjoy!

BRING a season’s worth of fun games

surprise your host with our faux-grass tote filled with hours worth of amusement: a horseshoe set (which doubles as a good luck charm), a set of bocce balls and our cheery playing cards featuring a summery design by australian artist florence broadhurst. keep everyone cool in the heat of competition, with a sixpack of icy suds too.
